My favourite food cart in Portland is Whiffies Fried Pies. It serves up a variety of deep-fried pie pockets, with vegan options that include tofu pot pie and mixed berry. Mmm.

Finally, a food truck has brought hand pies to the streets of Vancouver. Aussie Pie Guy (Hamilton Street and West Georgia Street) opened in June.

One of the truck’s Australian-style pies is both vegan and gluten-free. The Hip pie ($8)—hardy har har—features lentil curry with cauliflower and tomato inside a crust made from rice, tapioca, and quinoa flour.

Upon ordering the Hip pie, I was advised it is not made in a gluten-free kitchen, which may be a concern for people with a gluten sensitivity. I found the filling to be yummy and not spicy, but I would have liked to taste the cauliflower and tomato more. The crispy pastry, however, was perfect.

Aussie Pie Guy is a member of the new pod of food carts—which includes vegan truck Culver City Salads—in front of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in the downtown core. It is typically parked there Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and accepts cash and credit.
